West Ham United attempted to land Fikayo Tomori from Chelsea a year ago today, and they may feel they missed out on a real star.

The Hammers were looking to land a centre back before the transfer deadline a year ago today – October 5th, 2020.

In the end, West Ham brought Craig Dawson to the club from Watford, securing a bargain signing to bolster David Moyes’ back four.

The top target on the day was Chelsea ace Fikayo Tomori – but that deal fell apart.

Goal reported that West Ham and Chelsea ran out of time to get a season-long loan deal done, with Tomori left sitting around at Stamford Bridge.

Come January, AC Milan signed Tomori on loan with a permanent option – and what a masterstroke that now looks like.

Tomori has become undroppable for Milan.

His partnership with the more experienced Simon Kjaer has been outstanding, and his form has now seen him impress Gareth Southgate.

Tomori is back in the England squad right now, and you can’t bet against him nailing down a spot moving forward.

West Ham did finally sign a Chelsea defender in August as Kurt Zouma arrived, but they may wish they had landed Tomori.

A loan to secure a permanent move could have been ideal for West Ham, but they’re now watching on as Tomori becomes a star in Italy.

Even if Tomori comes back to England one day, West Ham’s window has probably gone.
