The Hammers new signing will link up with the Premier League club on a free transfer once his Espanyol contract expires.

West Ham United unveil new signing Roberto Jimenez Gago at The London Stadium on May 31, 2019 in London, England.

West Ham United have announced the signing of goalkeeper Roberto Jimenez Gago on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old Spaniard will join the Hammers on 1 July, after his contract with La Liga club Espanyol expires, on a two-year deal with a club option for a further 12 months.

Roberto came through the ranks at Atletico Madrid and has played for a variety of clubs in Spain, Portugal and Greece including Benfica, Zaragoza and Olympiacos.

The former Spain Under-21 international arrives as a replacement for compatriot Adrian, who will leave the London Stadium when his contract is up next month.

Roberto worked with West Ham director of Football Mario Husillos during their time at Malaga, the keeper making 34 appearances for them in 2017-18 according to Transfermarkt.

Admittedly, the signing seemed to have come out of the blue, with a number of Hammers faithful appearing a little bewildered and making their feelings known on Twitter:

Some West Ham fans were pleased enough with the announcement and sought to be optimistic:

According to the West Ham website, Roberto has played 39 times in European competition – 27 Champions League appearances and 12 Europa League appearances – for Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Olympiacos.
