Could West Ham United really move for Dimitri Payet?

West Ham United have already made a big splash with the signing of Spanish playmaker Pablo Fornals, but fans think another could in the pipeline.

The Hammers put out a tweet on Wednesday asking fans to share their favourite goal by Dimitri Payet, who controversially left the club in January 2017.

Payet was a hero in East London having joined from Marseille in 2015, racking up 11 goals and 18 assists in 18 months with the Hammers.

However, he burned bridges for many when he downed tools at West Ham and essentially refused to play until they allowed him to re-join Marseille, which went through in the end.

Payet featured regularly for Marseille last season, notching six goals and seven assists, but they may well sell the 32-year-old in order to raise funds.

West Ham may have merely been engaging with fans during the off-season, but others think the club had something else in mind with their tweet.

Many believe that West Ham were testing the water to see how fans responded to the mere mention of Payet in an official capacity, with some suggesting that it’s obvious that the Hammers are up to.

A number of fans want to see Payet return, even after his controversial exit two-and-a-half years ago, with the general consensus being that the tweet hinted at targeting him for a shock comeback.
