Eric Dier played a key role during England’s march to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals.

Now he has a new challenger for his spot.

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has declared he will play international football for England, issuing a statement via Twitter.

Rice had been eligible to play for Republic of Ireland, having done so at youth level.

After several months deliberating over his choice, Rice has made his mind up.

Rice, also able to play at centre-back, has had a strong season and recently scored a winning goal over Arsenal.

Hammers fans are convinced he will take Dier’s spot in the England team.

Dier has barely featured over the past two months for Tottenham due to injury and illness.

Rice has a strong chance to stake his claim if selected for the Three Lions’ upcoming March internationals.
