On Monday night, it was the turn of West Ham’s youngsters as the Hammers Under-23’s were in action against their Blackburn Rovers counterparts at Ewood Park.
It proved to be a comfortable evening for West Ham, as Nathan Holland got the scoring started after just four minutes, before forward Xande Silva marked his return from injury with a goal.
The Portuguese talent then hit his second of the game and West Ham’s third after the break before being substituted, and Joe Nuttall’s penalty handed Blackburn a consolation.
The big story from the game was the impact of attacker Silva, with the 21-year-old coming back from injury to make a huge impact with a brace inside 53 minutes after two months out.
A summer signing from Vitoria Guimaraes, Silva made an instant impact in the Under-23’s and now looks set to do it again – but fans want him in the first team soon.
Supporters took to Twitter to call Silva ‘unbelievable’ and brand him West Ham’s ‘next big thing’, and called on Pellegrini to include him in the first team at Newcastle United this weekend in a bid to provide a spark in the final third.
