Manuel Pellegrini’s side slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Asia Trophy yesterday.
But there were a number of reasons to be cheerful for West Ham – and Wilshere’s performance was one of them.
Not for the first time during a pre-season friendly, the former Arsenal midfielder looked a level above his team-mates.

Wilshere will be desperate to make up for lost time.
His first season at West Ham totalled less than 400 minutes of first-team action under Pellegrini due to injury.
But friendly or not, these games are a big reminder that Wilshere is a fantastic player and, for his sake, it would be great to see him produce these heroics in the Premier League on a regular basis.
