West Ham United midfielder Mark Noble has been in resurgent form over the last few weeks, so he would have been disappointed to leave the field after just 35 minutes against Stoke City on Saturday.

In his place stepped Declan Rice, who has been one of the few Hammers youngsters to make his mark in recent times despite the academy producing a number of impressive teenage talents.

It is testament to Rice’s ability that he has been able to force his way through while so many of the club’s next generation are still waiting for their chance and he was impressive again as his side overcame Stoke 3-0 at the weekend.

The 18-year-old has played 11 times for West Ham this season and he looks equally comfortable as a centre-back or a holding midfielder.

It is in the latter position where Rice may be required in the coming weeks, depending on the severity of Noble’s injury, but on Saturday’s evidence he will have no issue stepping in for the West Ham skipper.
