Steve McClaren has been linked with replacing Sam Allardyce at West Ham United.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that West Ham United boss Sam Allardyce is set to turn down the offer of a two-year deal to stay at Upton Park, which will leave the club’s officials with a lot of work to do if the paper’s report is accurate.

It would give the Hammers a big decision to make over who fills the shoes of Big Sam, with the Derby Telegraph reporting that Derby boss Steve McClaren is one of the latest names to have been linked with role.

The main issue that a lot of West Ham fans seem to have with Allardyce is his style. There is pressure on West Ham to develop and aim for a position in the top eight next season and there’s doubt over whether Allardyce is the man who can achieve that.

He likes his teams to play aggressive and direct football, which makes them more difficult to counter attack but they arguably lack a plan B when that style of play doesn’t work effectively in games against opponents who control possession.

The Hammers will be appealing to McClaren because they represent a step up to the Premier League and a team with a relatively good chance of avoiding the drop down into the Championship in the immediate future.

He definitely has the experience to make a difference at Upton Park before the Olympic Stadium move, but it would be a massive call for the Hammers to make as they aim to progress and develop in all aspects.

They also face the problem of wrestling him away from Derby where he may feel as though he’s still got a point to prove having failed to get the club promoted from the second flight in their last two seasons.

Here’s what Hammers fans have made of the McClaren rumours on Twitter.
