West Ham United are reportedly interested in re-signing Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe.
According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United are looking to re-sign Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe during the January transfer window.
Slaven Bilic’s men have seen summer signings Jonathan Calleri and Simone Zaza fail to hit the back of the net since arriving on loan from Deportivo Maldonado and Juventus respectively, meaning that a new striker is desperately needed in January.
Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe
A host of players have been linked with the club, and the latest rumour suggests that an old face could be returning to East London if West Ham get their way.
The Daily Mail report that West Ham have set their sights on Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe, and could offer a player-plus-cash deal to try and tempt the Black Cats into a deal.
West Ham fans
Defoe, 34, started his professional career with West Ham having joined as a teenager in 1999, scoring 41 goals in 105 games before moving on to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in 2004.
Now, Defoe is the shining light for Sunderland, as he’s hit eight goals in 18 games for the Black Cats as they look to avoid relegation from the Premier League yet again.
The speculation was always bound to spark a reaction from West Ham fans, and many of them felt that Defoe is the proven goalscorer that Bilic needs right now, and would love to see him return to the club.
Supporters would like to see Defoe link up with Andy Carroll in the West Ham attack, and feel a return to East London is actually long overdue.
However, others sent messages to co-chairman David Gold, suggesting that Defoe shouldn’t be given another chance with West Ham having walked out on the club almost 13 years ago, with some unwilling to forgive him for his exit.
