West Ham’s results have improved since they sold wantaway playmaker Dimitri Payet, but the Frenchman has not had the same fortunes at new club Marseille.

Payet’s Marseille were hammered last night at home, losing 5-1 to PSG in a match where it felt like the visitors could have hit double figures had they really needed to.

It was an embarrassing result for a team which had invested heavily in the transfer window, and had hoped the homecoming of Payet would take them onto the next level.

Payet was on the wrong end of heavy defeats in the first half of the season at West Ham, notably against Arsenal, Manchester City and in the cup against Manchester United, and judging on last night, a repeat here was no coincidence.

Marseille played like a team of individuals, and Payet’s defensive work was questionable.

He had four attempts on goal, with only one landing on target.

West Ham meanwhile have looked like a more united team without Payet, and have moved back into the top half of the Premier League table since his exit.

Fans reacted with amusement to see Payet on the losing side once again in such circumstances…
