West Ham United avoided relegation in the final few games of the Premier League this season. The Hammers, at one point, looked destined to go down but Michail Antonio’s heroics took them past the line.
Antonio has been used almost everywhere at West Ham over the years. The Englishman has played on both wings, as a full-back and even up top, and the latter is where he has been the most impressive.
Relying so heavily on Antonio was not a part of West Ham’s plans this term. The Hammers spent plenty of money last summer to bring in Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Frenchman scored 20 goals and provided 12 assists for the Bundesliga outfit last term, and he was expected to be the man to solve West Ham’s goal-scoring woes this season.
However, Haller has scored just seven times in the league this season and, as a result, the Hammers are in the market for a new striker.
Sky Sports claim that West Ham are interested in signing Bordeaux’s Josh Maja this summer. The former Sunderland man isn’t necessarily pushing for a move, but the club are in a difficult financial situation and they could move him on to raise funds.
Good signing?
David Moyes knows Maja very well. The young striker was handed his debut by the Hammers boss when he was at the helm at Sunderland back in 2016.
Maja has scored eight goals and provided three assists in just eight starts. He averages a goal every 112 minutes, which is a stunning record considering that he is only 21.
If a feasible deal can be struck, Maja would be a decent signing for the Hammers. The youngster, born in London, should not mind a return to his home town, and he could become a very good player in the coming years.
