West Ham United went down 2-0 away to Everton on Saturday.
Manuel Pellegrini has claimed that Everton’s disastrous league form inspired their 2-0 win over West Ham United on Saturday.
Everton, who were 18th prior to kickoff, stopped a run of four straight defeats by beating Pellegrini’s side at Goodison Park yesterday afternoon.
Speaking to BT Sport afterwards, the Chilean manager said: “Maybe, when you are in Everton’s situation you have more energy. It happened last season with our team here in the same stadium. We came to play against Everton after four defeats and beat them 3-1.”
And suffice to say that some West Ham fans weren’t buying their manager’s rationale. Here’s how they reacted to Pellegrini’s comments on Twitter:
You can see where Pellegrini is coming from but, by the same token, it isn’t a valid excuse.
Yes, Everton were the more motivated side and it was reflected in the victory and performance as a whole, but it’s a manager’s job to motivate his players and if West Ham weren’t as up for it then the buck stops with the former Manchester City manager, a Premier League winner in 2014.
The Hammers are 12th in the table.
