The Hammers academy graduate began brightly but never achieved those same heights while at the London Stadium.

A number of West Ham United fans have taken to Twitter to give their thoughts on Reece Oxford leaving the London Stadium to join Bundesliga side in a permanent move away (official Hammers website).

The 20-year-old England Under-20 international, who made his Hammers first-team debut aged just 16, spent the second half of last season on loan at the German club, making eight appearances, and has now joined them on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Oxford, a defender who has also played in defensive midfield, burst onto the scene back in 2015 when Slaven Bilic handed him a debut in the UEFA Europa League first qualifying round first leg win over Lusitanos of Andorra in July.

The following month, he became the second-youngest starter in Premier League history when he began in West Ham‘s 2-0 Premier League win at Arsenal, famously keeping Mesut Ozil in his back pocket all game.

Unfortunately, Oxford has never quite reached those same heights while at the club, having several stints away on loan at Reading and in Germany, and leaving with just 17 first-team appearances in claret and blue under his belt.

Reaction on social media to the player’s departure was somewhat mixed, with several fans bemoaning the fact it didn’t work out, others pleased he’s gone, and others not impressed about the club having offloaded yet another player:
