West Ham owner re-ignited a debate over his controversial comments.

West Ham co-owner David Gold made headlines two months ago when he insisted young players should stop expecting to make the first team and be content to go out on loan deals instead.

His comments were criticised by celebrity fan James Corden and former player Dean Ashton, The Mirror reported.

Now Gold has sought to re-ignite the debate, using comments from defender Reece Burke to echo the point he made.

The co-owner took to Twitter yesterday to set out his case…

Gold’s comments were met with derision from supporters, who felt that Gold was acting immaturely to try and score points on the debate, with others insisting he is plain wrong.

The co-owner is already under fire from fans with the club failing to make any sort of positive impact in the transfer market this summer.

Burke is an interesting case as this time last year he was being tipped for the first team after an impressive League One spell.

A season with Championship strugglers Wigan went poorly, and Burke is further away from the first team than he was 12 months ago.

Yet there is a case to be made that by sending Burke to a bottom of the table side – who ended up relegated – the club made a poor choice, and the defender would have been better off staying and trying to improve around superior players.
