West Ham United suffered defeat in China this afternoon, as they lost 4-1 to Manchester City in the Premier League Asia Trophy in Nanjing.
The Hammers were hoping to spring something of a shock, and they named a strong team to take on Pep Guardiola’s men for a spot in the final of this pre-season tournament.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side were impressive in the early stages and went ahead as Mark Noble scored from the penalty spot, with Anglelino giving away a spot kick with a handball.
City hit back though as David Silva rattled home Adrian Bernabe’s stunning pass, and Lukas Nmecha scored a penalty of his own having been brought down by Angelo Ogbonna.
Guardiola then unleashed the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane at half time, and they ran riot in the second half, with Sterling bagging a brace.
West Ham will take positives from the 4-1 defeat, and one of the biggest boosts was the performance of midfielder Jack Wilshere, as he looks to once again prove his fitness.
Signed by Manuel Pellegrini last summer, Wilshere suffered yet another injury-hit season last term, but was handed a start today as he looks to rebound this season.
West Ham fans were really impressed with the playmaker’s display, branding him ‘mint’ and ‘absolutely class’, noting that he oozes class and offers great composure and calmness on the ball.
