Croatia’s goal deflected in off Dier, after he failed to close his opponents down.
Some West Ham supporters used Dier’s poor game to call for Declan Rice to come in as his replacement.
Rice is still undecided over his next move at international level.
He is eligible to play for England and the Republic of Ireland, who left him out of their recent squad amid the midfielder’s struggle to choose.
The 19-year-old has made nine starts for the Hammers this season in the Premier League.
Rice told BBC Sport last week that he is torn and that this is the toughest decision of his career so far.
