West Ham duo joined by Brighton, Crystal Palace and Chelsea flops on list of most disappointing new signings of Premier League opening weekend.
All 20 Premier League teams have now played their first game in a thrilling opening weekend that saw surprise away victories for Burnley and newly promoted Huddersfield Town and a dominant win for Manchester United.
However, there were also some disappointing displays on show and many of those were from the array of new signings made by clubs from England’s top flight over the summer.
Here are the worst.
Joe Hart of West Ham United is dejected after the Premier League match against Manchester United.
Joe Hart
Deemed surplus to requirements by Manchester City the goalkeeper secured a loan move to West Ham United that many at the London Stadium thought was a good deal.
It could still turn out to be so as well, but a 4-0 demolition at Manchester United gave Hart little opportunity to show Pep Guardiola he had made a mistake letting the England international go.
Davy Propper
It was a tough opening day fixture for Brighton and Hove Albion, who welcomed Man City to the Amex Stadium for their first top flight encounter since 1983.
However, they were not helped in a 2-0 loss to a fairly lacklustre Citizens by a sloppy debut from club record signing Propper in midfield.
Jairo Riedewald
The honeymoon period for new Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boer is already over after a 3-0 home defeat to Huddersfield Town.
One who was picked out for particular criticism on the day was new boy Riedewald, with the defender not only conceding three goals but looking nervy on the ball and getting sarcastically jeered by his own fans.
Antonio Rudiger
There was some respite for the Eagles, though, as arguably the worst performance of the weekend was given by reigning champions Chelsea, who lost 3-2 at home to the Clarets.
It was baptism of fire for Rudiger in defence after his summer move from Roma on a day when Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas also saw red for the Blues.
Pablo Zabaleta of West Ham United and Marcus Rashford of Manchester United battle for possession.
Pablo Zabaleta
Another Hammers signing from the Etihad Stadium, Zabaleta initially looked solid at Old Trafford as he denied Romelu Lukaku with a last ditch block.
The right-back’s age soon showed, though, as he continually came off second best against an electric Marcus Rashford and West Ham will be hoping the Argentine is not already over the hill.
