Jose Fonte endured a difficult spell following his January move to West Ham United.
West Ham United’s Jose Fonte has opened up about his first few months with the club
Jose Fonte has admitted to West Ham’s official website that it has been a challenging time for him since he arrived at the London Stadium in January, and added that he hopes to become loved amongst the Hammers faithful.
The 33-year-old has endured a largely difficult spell since joining the Irons during the last winter window, showing few signs of being worth the £8 million that West Ham paid Southampton for him (via Guardian).
And speaking shortly after Slaven Bilic’s men brought the curtain down on the campaign with a victory over Burnley, the Portuguese admitted that he was under no illusions regarding how his first few months with the club have gone.

“No doubt that it has been a challenging season since I came in. It hasn’t been a perfect situation but all the focus now is on having four weeks’ rest and coming back for a new beginning,” he told the club’s official website.
“I want to come back and start over again and be loved.”
In fairness to the centre-back, some of his performances during the latter stages of the campaign suggested that he could turn out to be a decent addition to the squad, having helped the Hammers keep clean sheets against the likes of Swansea, Everton, Stoke and Tottenham.

But given his age and the money spent on him, he will be well aware that he will surely be under a tremendous amount of pressure to hit the ground running next season if he wants to become loved amongst the fans.
Fonte is at an age where his quality could arguably decline quickly if he does not adapt his game, but if he can make some changes, then perhaps he can put this difficult spell behind him and win the supporters over.
