Sead Haksabanovic made his first start for West Ham last night for their under-23 team as they took on Swindon Town in the Checkatrade Trophy.

West Ham managed to secure a 3-2 victory, with Martin Samuelsen, Moses Makasi and Daniel Kemp scoring the goals.

Under-23 coach Terry Westley praised Montenegro youngster Haksabanovic, who signed from Swedish side Halmstad last week.

Speaking to the club website, he said: “Haksabanovic should be very pleased with his debut.

“He cut inside once and hit a great shot off the top of the crossbar, and that side of the pitch and the front players were brilliant.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Sead and trying to help him. He didn’t know all of our players – he’s trained once with us – but he was a real threat today.”

Westley also picked out Antonio Martinez, Domingos Quina, Martin Samuelsen, Nathan Holland and Moses Makasi for their attacking contribution in the victory.

It’s still too early to really work out quite what to make of the unusual format of the Checkatrade Trophy even in its second season in this guise.

What it does do is provide extra opportunities for young players to get game time, and Haksbanovic, 18, will be pleased to have got off to a positive start.
