West Ham youngster Marcus Browne scored last night for the under-23s as they drew 2-2 with Tottenham.

The gifted attacking midfielder has been on the fringes of West Ham’s first team for two or three years now and is bidding to earn a breakthrough.

His progress has been hampered by injury troubles and an unsuccessful loan spell at Wigan.

Last night was just his sixth under-23 appearance of the season and it was his first goal of the campaign.

Under-23 coach Liam Manning was impressed with Browne’s contribution, and feels he has been a standout player since his return from injury.

Manning told West Ham’s official website: “The goal will hopefully give Marcus a boost going forward after he’d been out for a while, and his performances since he returned has been superb.

“He will hopefully continue to look a threat and you give him a few more chances, he’ll score those.”

Browne is one of the most talented players to come through West Ham’s academy in recent seasons but his prospects now really centre on him being able to stay healthy.

If he can remain injury free then there is a real chance he can build a case for first team involvement, and more goals for the under-23s will certainly help his case.
