West Ham United advanced into the next round of the Carabao Cup after thrashing League Two outfit Macclesfield Town 8-0 at the London Stadium on Wednesday night.

The scoring began when Declan Rice crossed for forward Michail Antonio to head home the opener, before youngster Grady Diangana’s shot was saved and Robert Snodgrass prodded the ball home on the line with Macclesfield unable to clear.

Aaron Cresswell crossed for Lucas Perez for the third, and it became four after the break when right back Ryan Fredericks went on a run and smashed the ball into the top corner of the net.

Angelo Ogbonna made it five with a fine header from a Snodgrass corner, Scottish wide man Snodgrass grabbed his second from a Fredericks run, and the scoring was finished off when Diangana grabbed two goals of his own from Joe Powell passes.

It was a thumping win for West Ham, and whilst a host of experienced players flourished, the game may well be remembered for the number of Hammers youth graduates on the field in the victory.

Rice, already a first team star, was one of four homegrown talents in action, with Diangana, Powell and Conor Coventry all making their first-team debuts in claret and blue.

After the game, West Ham Under-16 coach Jack Collison took to Twitter to reflect on an amazing night for West Ham’s academy, with the famous conveyor belt of young Hammers talent seemingly kicking back into life again.

Collison suggested that the four players in question – Rice, Diangana, Powell and Coventry – have inspired everybody at the club, and was delighted to see the three debutants make their bows under Manuel Pellegrini.
