The Hammers chief backed his players after a twitter barb.
West Ham United fans have been venting their displeasure at the club’s owners David Gold and Sullivan all season long. The fans believe the team has not been invested in enough during the summer and winter transfer windows and are disappointed in the direction the club is going.
This was again evident on Twitter last night. After co-chairman Gold tweeted to a fan congratulating them on the birth of a new daughter, one fan commented on how the newborn would be better off as a West Ham fan if Gold and co were not in charge.
It was a post that got a swift riposte from the West Ham chief. He criticised the comment, suggesting it would insult the current West Ham players.
Of course, he opened himself up to even more online criticism with that post.
It is easy to see both sides of the argument here. Firstly, Gold could be commended for backing his current players. He was also responding to a West Ham fan who had just had a baby, which is a class act from the co-owner.
Then there is the opposite side of the coin. West Ham fans have been suffering for some time and found the January transfer window to be highly underwhelming. The desperation signing of Patrice Evra after the window had shut showed the Hammers maybe did not have a successful window.
West Ham fans are not about to go out and stop supporting their current players and whoever is on the field will get some support, as long as they try their best.
But Hammers fans wanted more signings like Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez in January, but they never came along.
West Ham just want to see the squad grow bigger, and stronger, not just the former.
