West Ham United have endured a rollercoaster ride of a season laden with ups and downs, and Monday night served up yet more disappointment as Manuel Pellegrini’s charges fell to a 2-0 defeat away at Chelsea in the Premier League.

Blues attacker Eden Hazard impressed for the hosts with a well-taken brace, opening the scoring with a mazy solo goal in the first half before making sure of all three points with a powerful low finish in the 90th minute at Stamford Bridge.

The Hammers have been beset with inconsistency for much of the season, with such impressive results as September’s 3-1 win over Manchester United or the 1-0 triumph against Arsenal in January offset by bad results like March’s 2-0 loss at Cardiff City.

Although the visitors were a much more organised and dangerous outfit in the second half in West London, Hammers ace Ryan Fredericks spoke about how they possibly showed Chelsea too much respect in the first half, admitting that Pellegrini was not happy.

“It was a game of two halves for us, really,” the right-back told West Ham TV. “The first half, we weren’t at it at all, and I think we probably gave them a bit too much respect, which let them play. We didn’t play our stuff and the manager told us that he wasn’t happy with the first half – and rightly so. We came out for the second and we were a bit better.

“We had a couple of chances and, on another day, maybe Arnie’s header goes in or Cresswell’s shot might go in. But they are a world-class side with world-class players, and on their day, it is hard to stop them.”

Some Hammers fans on Twitter picked up on Fredericks’ comment about being “a bit better” and believed it very much sums up the current issues at the club:
