West Ham United boss Slaven Bilic has confirmed that Sam Byram has suffered a hamstring injury but has admitted that he is unsure of long how the right-back will be out of action, the BBC report.

The former Leeds United player was given the chance to stake his claim for a regular first-team spot against Middlesbrough but his afternoon lasted just a matter of seven minutes.

Stretching for the ball, Byram pulled up and he was subsequently replaced by Spaniard Alvaro Arbeloa.

Talking to the BBC after the game, Bilic hinted that the injury could have been caused as a result of too much pressure psychologically before adding the player knew instantly his hamstring was gone.

The Croatian boss said: “He didn’t even kick the ball, he stretched. Maybe it is psychologically too much pressure. It was a shame that it happened to him when he had his chance. It is his hamstring. He heard a pop. We don’t know the length.

Byram was signed by the Hammers last January, yet despite boasting plenty of promise he has largely been restricted to a place on the bench with Michail Antonio instead favoured at right-back.

Against Boro he was making only his third start of the Premier League season, and his first since that disappointing 4-2 defeat at home to Watford following the previous international break.

West Ham have been incredibly unlucky with injuries this season, and with fellow full-backs Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku also ruled out of action, Byram’s injury could not have come at a worse time.
