The West Ham United boss admitted he was surprised to see Tottenham Hotspur fail to add to their squad this summer.
West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini addressed the media yesterday, ahead of his side’s clash with Liverpool on Sunday, and suggested that it was strange that Tottenham failed to sign a single player during the summer transfer window, as quoted by Football.London.
The Hammers’ transfer activity was a polar opposite to their London rivals, with Pellegrini bringing in nine new faces to the tune of around £100 million.
Tottenham fans will be shocked that their club didn’t spend a penny this summer, and rightly so, considering the fact that they finished last season a full 23 points adrift of eventual Premier League champions Manchester City.
Pellegrini, who took over as West Ham boss during the summer, spoke to reporters yesterday, and responded when asked whether he was surprised to see Mauricio Pochettino’s lack of business, as quoted by Football.London:
“It is strange that one or two clubs didn’t sign any players, but I suppose that they believe they have the squad they need.”
Pochettino does, of course, still have a wonderfully strong group of players at his disposal, but the fact that they have not added any new faces this summer could see them stagnate, rather than make real progress.
And considering some of the business that West Ham have done, the two clubs might just be closer in the table this season than ever before.
