Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez continues to be linked with the West Ham role as pressure builds on Hammers boss Slaven Bilic.

The Hammers approached Benitez to take over before he took the Real Madrid role, where he lasted just six months before returning to English football at Newcastle.

The Northern Echo reports West Ham are interested in offering Benitez the job if he wants it and they dispense with Bilic, who has not won a game this season.

But a move to the Hammers might be the worst case scenario for all concerned.

What’s wrong at Newcastle

Benitez is unhappy after a difficult transfer window saw him struggle to sign players.

He had been promised a large budget after leading them to promotion as champions, but the summer ended with their 2005 record transfer to sign Michael Owen for £16 million still intact.

In this crazy transfer market, that’s fairly remarkable.

West Ham little better

Slaven Bilic is having trouble with the West Ham board publicly second guessing his transfer decisions, and this looks like it would be a recipe for disaster for demanding manager Benitez.

Multiple reports have detailed Benitez’s anger at Newcastle’s transfer frustration – and West Ham would not exactly provide the quiet backdrop he is looking for.

The Hammers are still adjusting to their new stadium and fans still question the money the board has to make signings, with much of this summer’s business done at a budget, failing with their proposed big money move for William Carvalho.

The Mirror describe Benitez as a ‘control freak’, and dealing with two outspoken owners like David Gold and David Sullivan appears like it is simply the wrong fit.

The trio may one day decide to give it a go, but it would be a tenure which will likely have an unhappy ending, and the fans would be the ones who lose out.
