According to Fabrizio Romano, West Ham United are looking at the idea of signing James Ward-Prowse this summer.
This would be an exciting signing for many reasons. After all, Ward-Prowse is an England international who is very rarely injured with bundles of quality.
However, as we all know, Ward-Prowse’s standout attribute is his ability from set-pieces.
According to Oriol Romeu, the midfielder is just as good as Lionel Messi at free kicks, while the Match of the Day top 10 Podcast ranked him only behind David Beckham as the 2nd-best set-piece specialist in Premier League history.
Of course, this is incredibly exciting for West Ham if they manage to sign Ward-Prowse, but there’s one player in particular who should be salivating at the idea of playing alongside the Southampton captain – Tomas Soucek.
Soucek is already one of the most dangerous players in the Premier League when it comes to aerial ability and attacking set-pieces – he’s scored countless goals from headers and corners since joining West Ham, but if he links up with Ward-Prowse, he could reach a whole other level.
Just imagine how many goals Soucek could get if he has Ward-Prowse picking him out from every free-kick and corner. He wouldn’t be a Golden Boot contender by any stretch of the imagination, but we’re sure he could easily get into double figures.
Sometimes the difference between winning and losing a game can be a bit of luck from set-pieces, and if West Ham can hone that craft with Ward-Prowse and Soucek in the team they could make the gap to the top four even smaller.
Soucek could genuinely become one of the most powerful weapons in English football if West Ham manage to get this Ward-Prowse deal over the line.
