According to The Sun, West Bromwich Albion have made Sam Johnstone their number one target, if Ben Foster does leave the Hawthorns this summer, and that potential move would be hard for Aston Villa fans to stomach.

Johnstone has impressed hugely at Villa over the past two seasons, but the claret and blues do not appear to have the finances to make his transfer a permanent one.

If Villa now miss out on the signing of Johnstone, only to see him arrive at West Brom, it will be extremely disheartening for supporters of Steve Bruce’s side.

Johnstone has made himself very popular with his performances at Villa Park, with the stopper considered one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship last term.

West Brom would be signing guaranteed quality with Johnstone, but Villa would have played a big part in his development.

The claret and blues would have offered Johnstone the chance to get used to playing regular football, only to have watch him playing for their local rivals at the Hawthorns next term.

And if West Brom do complete the transfer, it is unlikely to be one which goes down well at Villa Park.
