The Baggies are allegedly considering making a bid which would activate the Newcastle winger’s release clause.
Speculation surrounding the future of Newcastle United winger Andros Townsend has been intense ever sine the club’s relegation was confirmed, and it would seem that he has another suitor as the Express & Star report that West Bromwich Albion are keen on signing the star.
Townsend joined the Magpies for £12 million in the January transfer window and was one of their most important and impressive players during the final three-and-a-half months of the season, scoring four goals in 13 appearances.
That form has reportedly seen him attract the attentions of top European clubs including Sporting Lisbon and Liverpool, and a move away from Tyneside is seeming increasingly likely.
Before England’s final squad was named for Euro 2016, Townsend said that he would settle his future after his international duty ended, but over three weeks on from confirmation of his exclusion things have become no clearer.
Now, the Express & Star reports that Albion have entered the chase for the 24-year-old as they consider activating the star’s reported £10.5 million release clause.
The Baggies are looking to add more of a creative spark this summer after struggling in the attacking third in portions of last season, and Townsend would fit the bill nicely.
However, the report suggests that one disadvantage for Albion in the race, aside from the reported interest of more successful clubs, could be Townsend’s alleged desire to return to London.
There is also his considerable wages to take into account, with the former Spurs man reputedly on around £55,000 per week, an outlay which would fly in the face of West Brom’s general policy.
