The West Brom teenager reportedly rejected a January loan move to Leeds United.
Leeds United were not exactly crying out for another central midfielder in January. Therefore, reports linking them with a surprise loan move for West Brom teenager Sam Field come out of the blue.
With Liam Bridcutt, Eunan O’Kane, Ronaldo Vieira, Kalvin Phillips and co all fighting for a place in the starting XI, Leeds didn’t need the 18-year-old. Though maybe he needed them. The Birmingham Mail claimed that Field rejected The Whites’ advances in order to stay and fight for his place at The Hawthorns.
Though perhaps he would have been better off on the bench of a team fostering a fearsome winning mentality, fighting tooth and nail to return to the Premier League and approaching each league fixture like a cup final.
Instead, the technical midfielder has been forced to twiddle his thumbs and wait for an opportunity in a side coasting through the remainder of the campaign without fears of missing out on European qualification or being dragged into a relegation dogfight – not that Tony Pulis will forgive such complacency.
In fact, since deciding to remain in the Midlands, Field has only been handed three minutes of game time by the West Brom boss, coming off the bench with seconds to go against Stoke and Bournemouth.
If he felt staying with The Baggies would help his development, his lack of game time in the last two months suggests patience may prove a hindrance.
