Southampton should consider making a move for the West Bromwich Albion star.
Southampton boss Mark Hughes has a lot of work to do at St Mary’s this summer, if he is to guide his side to a vastly improved 2018/19 Premier League campaign.
The Saints endured a woeful campaign last season, and narrowly avoided relegation down to the Championship, but it could be argued that Hughes has the nucleus of an extremely talented squad at his disposal.
One particular area where Hughes will want to improve, however, is his attacking options, after his Southampton side managed to score just 37 goals in the Premier League last season.
With this in mind, the Saints should consider a move for West Brom winger Matt Phillips, who is expected to leave the Hawthorns after the Baggies suffered relegation down to the second tier of English football.
The 27-year-old joined West Brom from Queens Park Rangers in the summer of 2016, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £5.5 million, and he has gone on to really impress in the Black Country.
Phillips can play anywhere along the front-line, but is most comfortable when deployed in the right wing position, and he would provide fantastic competition for the likes of Dusan Tadic and Nathan Redmond at St Mary’s.
The West Brom ace’s quality on the ball and direct style of play would surely help Southampton improve upon the potency of their play in the final third, and if Hughes does manage to bring him to the south coast, it could turn out to be a signing of real significance for the Saints.
