West Brom’s best summer signing – Grzegorz Krychowiak – arrived late, and could be Pulis’ biggest coup yet

West Bromwich Albion landed a coup in Grzegorz Krychowiak.

Whilst many Premier League clubs spent astronomical amounts of money on new signings, it may in fact be West Bromwich Albion who had the most impressive summer transfer window.

Tony Pulis enjoyed another solid season at The Hawthorns last term, and he has brought in a number of clever signings this summer, with the intention of pushing the Baggies towards the top eight of the Premier League.

Defender Ahmed Hegazi, left back Kieran Gibbs, defensive midfielders Grzegorz Krychowiak and Gareth Barry, as well as forwards Jay Rodriguez and Oliver Burke have all arrived to boost Pulis’ squad, with Transfermarkt totalling their summer spending at more than £40million, having also signed Chinese striker Yuning Zhang from Vitesse Arnhem and loaned him straight to Werder Bremen.

Picking out West Brom’s top signing if somewhat difficult, given that all six can stake a claim for that tag, and some have yet to even make their debuts for the club, but the addition of Krychowiak stands out as a particular coup.

The 27-year-old defensive midfielder starred for Sevilla following a 2014 move from French side Reims, winning two Europa League titles for the Andalusian side before following manager Unai Emery to Paris Saint-Germain last summer.

Polish international Krychowiak was expected to make a major impact in the heart of the PSG midfield, but he failed to replicate his success in the French capital, making just 19 appearances in all competitions.

Now, West Brom have swooped to sign Krychowiak on loan for the season, but the fact that they don’t have a permanent clause in the deal shows just how highly PSG still rate him despite letting him go for now.

A powerful holding midfielder, Krychowiak is the ideal cover in front of the back four, offering further protection in Pulis’ team, whilst his work rate and leadership will also make him the perfect fit for the West Brom boss.

Ultimately, Krychowiak may only be a short-term signing for West Brom, and winger Burke may be the best signing for the long-term, but Baggies fans should enjoy the season they have with a Champions League-calibre midfielder like Krychowiak, making him possibly Pulis’ biggest coup to date.
