Paul Dummett’s Newcastle United deal leaves the West Bromwich Albion boss with egg on his face.
On Thursday, Newcastle United announced that Paul Dummett had put pen to paper on a fresh contract which could, according to their website, run until 2022.
The 26-year-old has developed into a big player for Newcastle and his four-month absence in the first half of the campaign was considered a big blow for manager Rafael Benitez.
Fans of the St James’s Park side will be delighted over the news, but one man who might well feel a tad foolish is West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Pardew.
Back in January, the left-back suggested to The Chronicle that the now-West Brom manager once told him that he wasn’t good enough for the Tyneside club, when Pardew was at Newcastle.
But Dummett can now serve up a generous slice of humble pie for the former United boss because Benitez, a Champions League-winning manager, clearly believes that he is good enough.
Dummet appeared in all but one Championship game under Benitez last season and it would appear as if the Spanish coach rates the academy product very highly indeed.
Pardew, struggling at bottom-of-the-table West Brom, obviously had his reasons for not playing him way back when, and even he will surely be pleased for his former player, despite seemingly not believing that he was of an appropriate standard for the top flight.
