West Bromwich Albion continue to be linked with the Middlesbrough defender.
According to a report from the Mirror, West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City are the latest clubs battling it out to sign Middlesbrough centre-back Ben Gibson this summer, and if the Baggies can seal a deal it would be a superb piece of business.
West Brom manager Tony Pulis knows a quality defender when he sees one, but with the same report claiming Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Chelsea have all cast admiring glances his way this season, it would be one hell of a coup if the Baggies ultimately get their man.
Gibson is one of three talented young centre-backs that could be on the move this summer, along with Hull City’s Harry Maguire and Burnley’s Michael Keane, and there could be something of a merry-go-round beginning with the first player’s switch.
Only time will tell how that plays out. However there is no doubt West Brom need a quality young defender to replace the ageing Gareth McAuley and Gibson fits the bill.
He would not come cheap, with the Mirror claiming Boro want £20million – a fee that would shatter West Brom’s transfer record – but he is worth it.
If Pulis gets it right in the upcoming transfer window there is no reason why West Brom cannot be next season’s surprise package.
Beating his top flight rivals to the 24-year-old would be a great way to start.
