West Bromwich Albion were linked with a move for Manchester United defender Phil Jones during the summer.

Jones has always threatened to be an incredibly talented defender but it had arguably never quite clicked at Manchester United for the England international, and it seems that Tony Pulis was ready to offer him the chance to prove himself at The Hawthorns.

Ultimately however, the Baggies would not manage to pull off a deal, and they must surely be left kicking themselves that they did not take full advantage when the 25-year-old’s stock was low in the summer.
Of course, he may have cost a significant amount of money, but those are the kind of sums that West Brom will surely to spend if they hope to start elevating themselves out of the mid-table picture in the Premier League, and Jones would have added a huge amount of quality to the Baggies squad.

But that chance has surely now gone.
Jones has been fantastic at the start of this season, starting every top flight game and helping United keep the best defensive record in the division, with a staggering two goals conceded so far.
And now the Daily Mirror reports that Jones has now won Jose Mourinho over and is in line to earn a new contract at Old Trafford worth £150,000 a week – seemingly putting any questions about his future to bed entirely.
Given how impressive Jones has been this season, it would have undoubtedly been a sensational signing for the Baggies had they followed up their initial interest and then managed to bring him in, and Pulis would be forgiven for now wondering what may have been.
