QPR’s Steven Caulker might be available for a discounted fee this transfer window, should Tony Pulis’s West Brom take a risk with the centre-half?

For most of the transfer window, it seemed like Steven Caulker was on his way to Scottish Premiership champions Celtic. According to the Scottish Sun, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers even started formal talks with the QPR man, who incidentally hasn’t played a minute of competitive football since last October.

With Brendan Rodgers’ latest comments to the Sun, where he admitted he is not looking to sign another defender despite his injury-hit defence, Caulker seems to be back to square one.

Caulker has had a challenging few years off the pitch since leaving Tottenham, however he told the Guardian, that he is eager to get back on track on the pitch.

It is worth remembering, despite his troubles, that the former Tottenham man is just 25-years-old and has 123 appearances under his belt in the Premier League. He even made his debut for his country at the young age of 20.

So perhaps West Brom boss Tony should take an interest.

The Baggies are desperately looking for a central defender to partner Jonny Evans, and on paper, Caulker seems like the archetypical Pulis player. Tall, strong and good in the air, he is more than capable of being a mainstay at a mid-table Premier League club.

Given that he has just one year on his contract with the West London club he may be available for a very competitive price – the Scottish Sun suggested Celtic could have signed him for a ‘cut-price deal’. If he does recapture the form that compelled Roy Hodgson to call him up to the national team, he might end up being one of the bargains of the season.
