West Bromwich Albion should try and scupper Crystal Palace’s move for Arsenal defender Calum Chambers.

According to a recent report from The Telegraph, Crystal Palace are still yet to agree a fee with Arsenal for Calum Chambers despite the two sides being just £4 million apart in their valuations of the defender.

The Telegraph reports that a compromise is likely to be reached – but perhaps West Brom should look to trump the Eagles’ offer before that compromise is met.

Tony Pulis’ men have been fairly quiet during this summer window, and while one of their three signings has been a defender with Ahmed Hegazy joining on a season-long loan, the Baggies surely need to bolster their options at the back before the new campaign begins.

Chambers – who, The Telegraph reports, is valued at £20 million by the Gunners – can not only provide more depth in the centre of the defence, but can also cover at right-back and even push forward into midfield if required.

The 22-year-old showed during his loan spell at Middlesbrough last term that he has the potential to be a very good player in the Premier League, and West Brom would surely be foolish to let the opportunity to make a move pass them by.

Of course, Arsenal’s valuation means that it is likely that a bid at the higher end of the Baggies’ budget is going to be required for a deal to take place – but the former Southampton man arguably has the potential to justify any club’s decision to spend a significant amount of money on him.

But with Palace seemingly so close to Arsenal’s valuation, West Brom have little time to enter the race and make a bid for the defender.
