The Baggies are reportedly on the verge of bringing the midfielder back to the Premier League.

The Daily Mirror claimed that West Bromwich Albion are ready to hand Momo Sissoko a contract at the Hawthorns after the midfielder joined the club on trial.

And while Sissoko would bolster the Baggies’ options in the middle of the park, a move for former Everton man Leon Osman would arguably be a smarter piece of business.

Although the 31-year-old would provide Tony Pulis’ side with a greater physical presence, Osman would surely represent a safer bet.

The two-time England international may be older, but has much more Premier League experience under his belt, having made over 350 top flight appearances for the Toffees before he was released in the summer.

And with Sissoko having not played in England since leaving Liverpool in 2008, and having most recently played in the much less competitive Chinese Super League with Shanghai Shenhua, it will surely be much more difficult for the former Mali international to adjust quickly to the demands of playing for the Baggies than it would be for Osman.

The former Derby loanee has proven to be one of the most reliable performers in the top flight over the last decade, so his arrival would arguably represent little risk.

With West Brom enduring a fairly quiet summer, so much so that Pulis was left frustrated with their lack of spending (via Express and Star) – which suggests that there were more funds available – they perhaps only need a short-term fix until one of the upcoming windows when they can invest in a much more permanent signing.

And making Osman that short-term solution would arguably make more sense than signing Sissoko given that he is much more likely to be able to contribute to the Baggies straight away.
