The Baggies were reportedly hoping to bring the Switzerland goal-machine to The Hawthorns from Basel.

West Bromwich Albion have missed out on one of their reported summer transfer targets as Albian Ajeti has officially joined West Ham United for an undisclosed fee (official Hammers website), with Sky Sports News having previously reported it to be £8million.

The 22-year-old, who had been linked with The Hawthorns by the Express & Star, has joined the Premier League outfit from Swiss side Basel on an initial four-year contract, with an option to extend for a further two seasons.

West Brom lost Jay Rodriguez to Burnley this summer while Dwight Gayle returned to parent club Newcastle United, so at present Slaven Bilic only has two senior strikers in his squad in the shape of Hal Robson-Kanu and Kenneth Zohore.

As reported in the Express & Star, although the Baggies were keen on Ajeti, who scored 21 goals in 43 games for Basel last season, interest cooled due to the club deeming his wage demands unreasonably high, but the outlet did say West Brom retained an interest in the player.

With deadline day under way, Albion are believed to be scouring their market for cheaper alternatives up front, with Southampton forward Charlie Austin reportedly at The Hawthorns to discuss a possible switch from Southampton according to talkSPORT.
