West Bromwich Albion have confirmed that Steven Reid has returned to The Hawthorns to assist caretaker boss James Shan for the rest of the season.

The 38-year-old, who plied his trade as a full-back, spent four years with the Baggies from 2010 to 2014, making 89 appearances according to BBC Sport.

After hanging up his boots, Reid spent time learning the coaching ropes under two ex-WBA bosses – first with Steve Clarke at Reading and then with Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace

Reid’s return to West Brom, which had been speculated upon earlier this week, was officially announced on Thursday morning and was well received by much of the Baggies fanbase, as can be seen in the post’s Twitter comments.

“He’s got some fantastic coaching experience with some high calibre managers and recent experience of going to the playoffs with Reading,” Shan said of Reid in conversation with the official WBA website.

“I saw him coaching when he was still here as a player. He coached the Under-18s, who I was in charge of, while he was doing his badges. He’s an outstanding individual with great integrity and just what we need for the challenge ahead.”

Shan took the reins at The Hawthorns after Darren Moore was sacked as head coach on 9 March and began brightly as he surged to three wins in a row.

Albion then lost twice, but bounced back with Saturday’s 4-1 home victory over Alex Neil’s Preston North End, culminating in Shan being confirmed as coach until the end of the season.

West Brom are currently fourth in the Championship table, nine points clear of seventh-placed Middlesbrough with four games remaining, and will take on Hull City, Reading, Rotherham United and Derby County in their last regular fixtures of the campaign.
