Leeds United should take a close look at signing West Bromwich Albion stopper Boaz Myhill this summer.
Myhill is a free agent at the end of the season as one of a handful of Baggies players set to be released.
Leeds’ goalkeeping situation has been troublesome all season, with Felix Wiedwald and Andy Lonergan likely to be moved on.
Experience
Myhill is 35-years-old and has huge experience from a solid career in English football.
He has played more than 400 games in his career at club level, and has a Championship promotion on his CV with Hull City a decade ago.
Myhill is a reliable goalkeeper who has international experience for Wales, and he is exactly what Leeds need if they are to mount a promotion fight next season.
Happy to play back-up
Myhill has spent this season on the bench behind Ben Foster and playing a back-up role to talented youngster Bailey Peacock-Farrell is possible for him at Leeds.
Many would like to see the youngster remain first choice at Leeds next season after his breakthrough next year, but the Whites need an alternative.
There is only a small sample size on Peacock-Farrell, who may not be able to maintain his form, or stand up to the physical and mental demands of a 46 game season.
Myhill would be ready to take over if need be, or even start if required to avoid rushing Peacock-Farrell.
Absolute bargain… and probably an upgrade
Leeds 100 per cent need an upgrade on Wiedwald and Lonergan, and Myhill would probably be an improvement on Peacock-Farrell too despite the youngster’s potential.
Leeds should not go and sign a top keeper in his mid-20s who would delay Peacock-Farrell for years.
A proven veteran is by far the smarter option, who can help Leeds improve immediately while preserving their long term plans.
On a free transfer he would be an absolute bargain and tick all the boxes for the Whites, turning an area of weakness into a position of strength.
