The Baggies defender’s operation was a success but he’ll miss the start of The Hawthorns club’s season, with an estimated return date of mid-September.

#6 Ahmed Hegazi of Egypt looks on during the International Friendly between Portugal and Egypt at the Letzigrund Stadium on March 23, 2018 in Zurich, Switzerland.

A number of West Bromwich Albion fans have taken to Twitter to wish Ahmed Hegazi the best of luck in his recovery from surgery.

The official Baggies website announced on Thursday that the Egypt international had a successful operation on his ankle two days earlier.

Hegazi will begin his rehabilitation right away and West Brom have given a provisional return date of September, following the international break.

The 28-year-old played 49 games for club and country last season, and WBA head of sports science & medicine Andrew Leaver said it was an ongoing injury that was “managed” through 2018-19.

“However, the sheer volume of games he played last year which continued in the summer with Egypt, meant surgery was required to resolve the issue,” added Leaver.

In conversation with the official West Brom website, Hegazi said: “Everything went well and I’m now focusing on a full recovery and return as soon as possible.”

Here is some of the reaction from The Hawthorns faithful on social media:

Hegazi began life at West Brom on loan from Egyptian club El Ahly Cairo in the summer of 2017 and completed a permanent move to The Hawthorns in January 2018.

He has made 85 appearances for the Baggies and is contracted to the club until the summer of 2022, according to Transfermarkt.
