West Bromwich Albion kept up their push for promotion back to the Premier League by beating local rivals Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.
The Baggies, who drew with Nottingham Forest in midweek, made the short trip to Villa Park yesterday, and came home with all three points.
Two goals in four minutes towards the end of the first half sealed it, as Hal Robson-Kanu opened the scoring before Jay Rodriguez added a second before the break.
Villa couldn’t come back, meaning West Brom claimed three points, a clean sheet and boosted their promotion hopes, sitting just four points off the top two.
Whilst goalscorers Robson-Kanu and Rodriguez will grab the limelight with Dwight Gayle suspended, Sam Johnstone had a fine afternoon too.
The former Villa loanee was making a first return to Villa Park since his loan deal ended last summer, and he denied Tammy Abraham early on with some fine goalkeeping.
Baggies fans have been taking to Twitter to react to Johnstone’s performance, admitting that he is proving them wrong and making them eat their words having been critical of him this season.
Others called him ‘absolute quality’, ‘class’ and a ‘game changer’ after his fine showing and clean sheet, with Villa fans no doubt feeling that they would love to have him back at Villa Park.
