A number of West Brom fans on Twitter have insisted that Sam Johnstone needs replacing after the Baggies were beaten 2-1 by Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Day.

Darren Moore’s side have fallen to fourth in the Championship table after following their 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday with a defeat at Ewood Park in their first game of 2019.

And Johnstone appears to be taking plenty of stick for the first goal in particular. Charlie Mulgrew managed to find the back of the net directly from a corner during the early stages of the second-half.

The goalkeeper may argue that he was fouled, or least blocked, as the corner came in, and that is why he could not prevent the ball from flying into his goal. But some of the supporters appear to be fed up with the summer signing.

West Brom have kept just three clean sheets in the league this season, and Johnstone seems to be getting much of the blame for that statistic – though it must be mentioned that Kyle Bartley’s performance against Tony Mowbray’s side was also slated.

It is, of course, highly unlikely that the Baggies will look to replace Johnstone during this window – BBC Sport reports that West Brom paid £6.5 million for him in the summer – but there are clearly plenty of fans who feel that it may be necessary if the club want to get promoted.
