West Brom fans have been reacting on Twitter following recent comments from Baggies boss Tony Pulis which confirmed that the club had tried to sign John Terry from Chelsea in January, and may make another move this summer (via Daily Mirror).

Terry has become more of a fringe player at Stamford Bridge under Antonio Conte, and the Mirror reported that his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, so it would hardly be a surprise if his long association with the Blues came to an end this summer.

But could the Hawthorns be his next destination? Based on Pulis’ comments, it seems that he is definitely interested in signing the veteran having failed to land him in the most recent window.

“In January he wanted to stay with Chelsea,” he said, as reported by the Mirror.

“He wanted to stay there and be part of going out as a champion. I’m not sure how many times he’s won it with them but John wanted to stay there.

“If he becomes available in the summer, we’ll sit down and have a little think about what we’ve got and what we haven’t got and we’ll take it from there.”

The reaction to news of West Brom’s interest has received a fairly mixed response on social media. There is no question that Terry has managed to perform at an extremely high level over recent seasons despite his advancing years and reduced role for Chelsea, and that the Baggies need additional depth at centre-back.

However, it has also been pointed out that given the current options Pulis has available to him already, signing Terry would be an odd acquisition for the simple fact that they already have ageing defenders at their disposal at the Hawthorns.

If Jonas Olsson and Gareth McAuley stay with West Brom next season and are joined by Terry, the Baggies’ three main centre-back options would boast a combined age of 107 when the new campaign begins.

Interestingly, that has prompted one supporter to ask if the West Brom defensive coach is Dad’s Army character Captain Mainwaring.
