West Bromwich Albion were knocked out of the FA Cup by their Premier League rivals at The Hawthorns.
West Brom fans have had little to smile about lately, and their season suffered another setback at the weekend as they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Southampton at The Hawthorns.
Like Alan Pardew’s men, the Saints find themselves in a precarious position in the Premier League, so the Baggies may have been looking at the tie as a real opportunity to get some momentum into their season while also knocking the wind out of the sails of a relegation rival.
However, it was Southampton who booked their quarter-final spot as they clinched a 2-1 win against West Brom in a game where few of the Baggies players actually emerged with much credit.
One player who did receive a significant amount of praise on social media after the game was James McClean. The winger has endured a frustrating season with only seven of his 22 appearances seeing him included in the starting lineup.
However, the Republic of Ireland international – who was linked with leaving the Baggies during the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports – was excellent in the defeat.
And while some supporters feel that McClean being their man of the match is an indication of how poor they were, others have suggested that he deserves a lot of credit for his display.
