West Brom fan anger over Tyler Roberts will boil over if Rekeem Harper leaves

West Brom midfielder Rekeem Harper is reportedly being monitored by the Premier League’s top six.

For arguably the first time since his exit in January 2018, Tyler Roberts made West Brom look foolish for not getting the forward tied down to a long-term contract long before there were any doubts over his Baggies future.

His £4 million sale to Leeds came with West Brom well aware that he could potentially leave for nothing just a few months later (via Daily Mail). And while Roberts took some time to get going at Elland Road, his most recent performance hinted at how big a mistake it was for the Baggies to lose him.

Roberts has shown glimpses of quality this term, but unquestionably, his best display yet came when Darren Moore’s men travelled to Leeds for a crucial clash towards the top of the Championship.

The Wales international was outstanding as Leeds won 4-0, and understandably, several West Brom fans expressed their anger over the decision to not get his future resolved in the months before his exit.

But if the Baggies fans feel frustrated over Roberts, that anger is surely only going to boil over if they fail to keep hold of Rekeem Harper, who now finds himself in a similar boat at the Hawthorns.

The exciting midfielder is out of contract in the summer, and The Sun on Sunday (3/3; page 68) reports that Tottenham are leading the race to sign him for a compensation fee, while all of their top six rivals in the Premier League are also monitoring the situation.

Harper has forced his way into Moore’s plans in recent months. But his talent and potential has not been a secret to those who have been monitoring his development for a while, so it is very surprising that the Baggies have allowed such a prominent question mark to linger over his future.

Plenty will argue that staying at West Brom would be the smartest decision that Harper can make. He is certainly more likely to enjoy regular first-team football than if he heads to one of the Premier League’s top six.

But there is nothing the Baggies can do if Harper does not see it that way. And with Roberts making it abundantly clear that the club dropped the ball with their lack of action over his future, West Brom have to expect a major backlash if they once again lose their brightest prospect.
