West Brom want John Swift and Steve Bruce’s Championship giants are ‘optimistic’ that he can be persuaded to leave Reading for the Hawthorns, as reported by The Athletic.

Bruce has made no secret of his desire to add more ‘flair’ and creativity to a West Bromwich Albion side that, during their worst season in two decades, have often resembled a team attempting to carve through a well-done steak with one of those cardboard knives you find in seaside fish ‘n’ chip shops.

Fortunately, two of the division’s most talented forwards are available on free transfers this summer.

Jed Wallace, during Millwall’s final day defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday, looked very much like a man saying goodbye.

John Swift was denied an emotional farewell of his own thanks to an injury that kept him out of Reading’s final five games of 2021/22, however, and the midfielder could be wearing different colours next time he takes to the field in the Championship.

West Brom want John Swift

According to The Athletic, West Brom are ‘optimistic’ that a deal for Swift can be done. The former Chelsea youngster, a dead-ball specialist with a penchant for the spectacular, is one of only five players in the second-tier who have completed a ‘double-double’ this season.

By that, we mean he reached double figures for both goals (11) and assists (13).

If Bruce wants flair – a dash of creativity and some-needed unpredictability in the final third – then look no further.

Swift, who’s Reading contract expires in July, has also been linked with a number of Premier League clubs, including Leeds United. And while Leeds’ interest appears to have dried up of late, with the Yorkshire giants turning their attention to Brenden Aaronson, relegation for Jesse Marsch’s side could see Swift back on the radar.

Two of the most exciting attacking talents in the lower leagues – MK Dons’ Scott Twine and AFC Wimbledon’s Jack Rudoni – are also on West Brom’s summer hitlist.
