West Bromwich Albion coach Ben Garner has hinted to the Birmingham Mail that Marouane Chamakh will not be earning a permanent contract at the Hawthorns despite the striker featuring for the club in their recent friendly.
The 32-year-old has been training with the Baggies for the last few weeks, the Mail claims, and he started their game with Delhi Dynamos on Saturday.
However, he had to be taken off just 25 minutes into the game after a nasty challenge left him unable to continue. And Garner explained that he hoped that the Moroccan’s injury does not damage his chances of securing a contract, but hinted that that deal would not be coming from West Brom.
“It was a high tackle and he has got quite a nasty gash on his shin,” he told the Mail.
“It was unfortunate for him and hopefully it won’t be an injury that will keep him out too long.
“It will be sore, it will be bruised but it should settle down quickly and hopefully that doesn’t harm his search in finding a club and a contract.”
Hal Robson-Kanu has been added to the Baggies’ squad
With West Brom keeping Saido Berahino and adding Hal Robson-Kanu recently, the Baggies arguably do not need to sign Chamakh.
Though he has extensive Premier League experience, having played for Arsenal and Crystal Palace, as well as a brief loan spell with West Ham, he has hardly been prolific since coming to England so it is difficult to imagine that he would receive many opportunities at the Hawthorns if he did end up joining.
