West Brom have previously been linked with a move for Jonathan Panzo.

The Daily Record reported earlier in the summer that Jonathan Panzo is close to leaving Nottingham Forest, with West Brom, Coventry City and Rangers all interested. However, the Scottish club are leading the race for his signature for a fee of £2.5 million.

Given Rangers’ interest in Panzo, Sky Sports pundit and former West Brom and Nottingham Forest striker Kevin Campbell doesn’t believe the 22-year-old centre-back is likely to end up at the Hawthorns. As quoted by West Brom News, Campbell says, “Rangers are going win that one because there’s a lure and an opportunity there to not only win trophies but you’re in Europe…unfortunately, I just think West Brom can’t fight Rangers right now.”

This verdict will come as a blow to West Brom fans who recognise that Carlos Corberan needs to strengthen his side’s defence this summer. This need has been made even more urgent by the departure of Dara O’Shea.

Who is Jonathan Panzo?

Panzo would make for an exciting addition to the Baggies’ squad. The 6’1” youngster impressed in the second tier of English football whilst on loan with Coventry last season. It is unsurprising to see so much interest in the former England under-21 international. Plenty have recognised his talent, with his former under-21 coach at Forest, Dave Rogers, saying of Panzo: “He is a great professional. He’s enthusiastic and has got good experience and energy too,” as quoted by Rangers Review.

If Rangers can get their £2.5 million deal for Panzo over the line, then Corberan will have to look elsewhere for his much-needed defensive reinforcements and West Brom fans will curse their luck that the Scottish giants got involved.
